Manuscript plan of the Seletar Rubber Estate, Singapore.

The Seletar estate was located near the Woodlands Railway Station on the old Kanji Railway Line. This map pre-dates the land-reclamation and the subsequent construction of the British Naval and Air base at Seletar, which began in 1928 and opened in 1930.

The plan was drawn up by G. A. Fernandez & Co. a Singapore based auctioneer, surveyor, and architect, working out of 10 Raffles Place. A note to the lower left of the plan states that “portions coloured green and edged with blue & red are planted with pines [i.e. pineapples]”. The plan is accompanied by a five page report, on behalf of the Tebrau Rubber Estate, on the plantation which details the plantations layout, details on rubber, and pineapple planting, recommendations for further rubber cultivation, estimates of future revenue, and a valuation. Together with a share certificate and a ‘memorandum’ regarding a receipt of a cheque for shares in the Seletar rubber estate.

Scale: 16 chains to an inch.
