The depiction of the source of the Nile follows Ptolemy’s description, beginning in two large lakes at the foot of the fictional Mountains of the Moon (‘Mons lune’). An inscription across ‘regium Aethiopian’ notes the presence of elephants, rhinoceroses, and tigers.
