William Robert Gardner (fl. 1816-1829) was an engraver and cartographer working in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Between 1823 and 1825 he produced a set of maps of the British Isles for the publisher William Darton. Of which the present is his map of Scotland, which could be had from Mr Darton for 8s. Gardner is said to have lived a rather full and lavish life style financed it would appear by forged bills. Before the law caught up with him, he’s believed, in 1829, to have fled to New York with his eight year old son and some £10,000 in forged bills. His wife and three other children were left behind, claiming to know nothing.
