Large and detailed chart of the India Ocean.

The chart extends west to east from the Cape of Good Hope to New Zealand, and from north to south from the Red Sea to Kerguelen Island. The chart shows just how impotant the India Ocean has become to British Merchant shipping by the end or the nineteenth century. The chart is crisscrossed with numerous sailing routes: from the steam boat routes from Aden to the Sunda Straits; the Cape of Good Hope to India, Bengal, China and New Zealand; and Australia to China. Lines of magnetic variation are marked as are the direction of currents. Text upon the chart gives information upon the Indian monsoon rains, and the various currents upon the coast of Australia. places marked with ‘P.D.’ upon the chart are noted as ‘position doubtful’.

James Imray (1803-1870), worked originally in the stationery and account book publishing business. In 1836 Imray joined with Michael Blachford. The partnership flourished and soon began to compete with the larger firm of Norie and Wilson. In 1846 Imray bought out Blachford, and the company survived, led by his descendants, into the twentieth century, when it merged with Norie and Wilson.
