笔记

Rare map of the Holy Land that appeared in the second edition of the Bishop’s Bible of 1572.

Humfray Cole (d. 1591) was, according to his own description upon the map, a “goldsmith, a English man born in ye north and pertayning to ye Mint in the Tower [of London], 1572.” He was obviously poorly paid by the mint, as he is known to have undertaken several commissions for his patron Edward Dyer and is mentioned ias an artisan by the poet Gabriel Harvey. He also supplied scientific instruments to Martin Frobisher, and an astrolabe to Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales.
