Notes

The map is undated and unsigned, but can be attributed to Lafreri because of the likely date of publication and the style. The geography follows the map of Cyprus published by Bartolomeo Faletti in Rome in 1560. Lafreri added the title cartouche surmounted by the winged lion of St Mark. The course of the Pediaus River is taken from a 1562 manuscript map by Georgio Sideri. Nicosia is still shown as surrounded by the walls built by the Francs, which were destroyed in 1567. Ascertaining the date of the map is difficult, as the city of Nicosia is shown still surrounded by the walls built by the Franks, which were destroyed in 1567; however, Stylianou argues that the map can be dated before 1570, the year of the Turks’ invasion and also the year in which an almost identical map was published by Lafreri’s nephew, Claudio Duchetti.

We have not been able to trace any institutional copies of this map – the ones held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Princeton University Library are the Duchetti versions – nor have we been able to find one sold at auction.
